Environmental Conservation
It takes a community to restore a forest so the saying goes. We share a vision with millions of people, of a world in which trees and forests flourish and their vital role in sustaining planetary and human well-being is valued. If we come together, we can realize this future. Although potentially renewable, forest resources in Kenya are exploited at a higher rate than their supply is renewed, rendering them non-sustainable in practice. Forest cover is very low compared to the United Nations’ globally recommended 10% for ecological stability of the country.
Agricultural expansion, timber harvesting and charcoal burning led to massive deforestation in the 20th Century. JCO aims to conserve agrobiodiversity and re-forest degraded lands to slow down the impacts of climate change globally. The initiative also envisages preserving soils and water locally as well as educating smallholder farmers, men, women, and the youth on the importance of planting trees to mitigate climate change. The Initiative supports the Kenyan Government to realize its goal of achieving 10% forest cover as recommended globally by the United Nations.
This is the first pillar of our approach. With local groups, we aim to restore the degraded hectares of land in and around the county with millions of trees.
Its is a method of integrating trees into farming systems, improving soil structure and fertility, increasing crop diversity and productivity, and thus creating income-generating opportunities.

What better way for kids to understand first-hand the importance of the natural world, than to get stuck in with planting trees? Each tree planted and nurtured by primary/secondary school students is a tree absorbing carbon for us all. Through planting trees, we’re able to help provide training, agricultural education, and sustainable incomes to these families whilst they plant, grow and protect the trees. Most importantly we enable the community members to lift themselves out of poverty. It also helps to prevent further deforestation. This way, we restore and conserve forests, and promote cultures of forest stewardship for generations. For sure, trees are really the superheroes of the planet and we need them in order to survive.
